As an Exakta and Exa collector, one often encounters the problem of finding incorrect or even missing film take-up spools in a camera, and so far there isn't much information available on the correct spool configuration. Therefore, this overview is intended to provide some assistance.
The designation of the coil version (blue number top left in the illustration) is based on Aguila, Clement; Rouah, Michel: Exakta Collection 1933-1987. DDP-Image-Editions Saint Amans Soult 2003, ISBN 2-9519891-0-5.
There are significant differences in the period of use depending on the source, so these figures should only be considered a guideline. However, the information in the literature stating that version 2 was only used until 1956 has been corrected. It is true that the Exa (0) was manufactured until 1962. Therefore, the reel must also have been used for this camera until 1962. Version 4.3 is only found in the Exa 1c, but some cameras still contain version 4.2. There were probably larger remaining stocks of version 4.2 reels, or the transition occurred during production around 1986. Due to the interchangeability of the reels, it is also possible that owners retrofitted the more convenient older reel with the clamping plate.
The color code of the take-up reels ensures the correct direction of rotation and core diameter; therefore, adhering to this color code is crucial for film transport and frame rate. All film reels are interchangeable as long as the color code is followed. This means, for example, that any reel with a green color code can be used in all cameras designed for green-coded reels; the construction (metal core, plastic core, or all-plastic) is irrelevant.
