Episode 15: I Say Nye-con You Say Nick-on

After a week off, Anthony, Theo, Paul, and Mike return with Episode 15 with more open source camera nonsense.  This time we are joined by Nikon collector and historian, Robert Rotoloni, Bill Smith from the Classic Camera Revival Podcast, Miles Lybak, David Goldberg, Howard Sandler, and first time caller, Mark Peterson.

In this episode we discuss everything from press cameras like the Koni Rapid Omega to Nikon Series E lenses, M42 SLR recommendations, Nikonos and other underwater photography, and a story about when National Geographic got rid of all their Nikon Fs and switched to the Olympus OM-1.

Our next episode will be recorded on Monday, December 27th at a different time, with the hope of including some UK and European listeners.  The show will be recorded at 1PM Central Time, 2PM Eastern Time, and 7PM London Time.  If you are across the pond and have wanted to join the show, but didn’t want to make up in the middle of the night, here’s your chance to jump in and influence the discussion!

Note: I apologize for my horrible audio quality on this episode.  Everyone else sounded fine, but for some reason, my microphone levels were through the roof.  I did my best to tame it in post processing, but there’s only so much you can do with a Zoom recording.  I’ll try to do better next time.

  1. Can you post-process Zoom audio thru Audacity? It allows easy volume editing.
My Belgian buddy says Nee-Kon, and mocks my mispronunciation when I say Nye-Kon. I ain’t gonna ask him hw to say “tomato”….

  2. A well-done and informative podcast, as always. A note regarding the discussion of the material used in the helicoid of Nikkor lenses. In the March 1974 issue of Popular Photography, there’s a lab report on the Nikkormat EL including the 50mm Nikkor S.C. 50mm f/1.4 lens. The technical director, the esteemed Norman Goldberg, writes that “the helical focusing mount was achieved with one-half of the pair of mating surfaces being anodized aluminum, and the other half bare aluminum. Anodizing produces a thin hard ‘skin” on the surface of aluminum, so the combination, while not ideal is workable, and lightweight.” So at least some of the Nikkors of the early 1970s (and probably later) did use an all-aluminum helicoid but with a caveat. It would seem cost-cutting was already underway as a helicoid made of dissimilar materials, traditionally aluminum and brass, would have been preferable to prevent galling without the need for excessive lubrication or an anodized surface that could eventually wear away.

    1. This is great info Victor! I might actually have that issue of Popular Photography as I do recall some of their deep dives into the Nikkormat. I will have to do some digging and see if I can find it! Thanks for sharing!
